A complete set is created by bringing individual sets together in shared packaging. For cardiac surgery it may consist, for example, of a machine set and a table set, with or without additional components.
Complete sets may additionally include cardioplegia, haemofiltration and transfusion sets or an oxygenator. The packaging can be selected according to a range of criteria.
The composition of these sets is determined by the requirements set out by the users and by their handling preferences.
The choice and delivery of cardioplegia, crystalloid or blood, cold or warm, pumped or by gravity, depends on the type of procedure and on the surgeon's preference. The components used for withdrawal (spike, needle, Luer lock or connector) depend on the cardioplegia container; delivery to the patient takes place via the cardioplegia table line.
The configuration is determined by the requirements in theatre. The set can be packaged separately or supplied as an integral part of the complete machine set.
A haemofilter set serves to remove unwanted volume (priming and flush solution), chemical and metabolic waste products and certain medicinal products from the circulating blood. The components to be removed are carried via a filtrate line to a waste bag.
The point at which it is integrated into the circuit and the filtration pressure determine the design and composition of the set.
The tubing materials of the table set are generally PVC or silicone. The type of packaging is determined by the user's preference and by the requirements of the technique and handling used, for example passing down or passing up, or pre-circulation technique.
A CPB machine set is used for extracorporeal circulation during cardiopulmonary bypass. This system carries the venous-arterial circulation of blood and priming fluid together with additives and medicinal products.
Machine sets are rarely standard sets; they are usually configured by the user to suit the specific spatial and application requirements.
